The tool was unveiled on October 19, 2026, at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas. It screens payments for fraud, scams and sanctions exposure, so a blockchain sanctions check now happens before settlement inside a mainstream payment network, not only on crypto-native platforms. It will launch first in North America, and Mastercard expects worldwide availability in 2027, according to The Block and Decrypt.

What Mastercard announced and when

Mastercard presented Stablecoin Security at Money20/20 USA on Monday, October 19. The Block describes it as a risk intelligence service for financial institutions, including banks. Its job is to assess the risk of a stablecoin payment before the money moves on-chain.

Two companies are the first announced partners: Borderless.xyz and Keyrails. Both have taken part in Mastercard’s Start Path program for blockchain and digital assets, according to both reports.

Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of Security Solutions, said in a statement that financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to take part in stablecoin payments with confidence.

The launch follows other stablecoin moves by the company. Mastercard completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK in August 2026. The Block reports that the deal was announced in March and valued at up to $1.8 billion. Mastercard expects to bring BVNK into Stablecoin Security next year.

How the screening works, according to the announcement

The reports describe the tool at a high level. Mastercard has not published a technical specification in the sources we reviewed. What the coverage states:

Data: it combines Mastercard’s payment intelligence with blockchain analytics.

Signals: it looks at where funds originated, exposure to restricted parties, and scam indicators. The Block says it traces the origin of funds and looks for links to fraud, scams, sanctions violations and other financial crime.

Output: it produces a risk score before a payment settles. The Block notes that it weighs transaction context before assigning that score.

Delivery: it is offered through an API, so banks can connect it to their existing fraud and compliance systems.

Scope: it assesses risk across the payment lifecycle, from initiation to on-chain movement.

Decrypt reports that the product builds on two earlier Mastercard crypto products, Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure.

Why sanctions screening before settlement matters for stablecoins

A card payment can often be disputed or reversed. A stablecoin transfer, once confirmed on-chain, generally cannot be pulled back by the sender. That is why the timing in this product matters: the check happens before settlement, while the institution can still hold, review or decline the payment.

Mastercard also pointed to the complexity of stablecoin flows. It cited a Bank for International Settlements working paper that analysed 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. That study found nearly 60% of transfer events happened inside complex, multi-step transactions rather than simple one-to-one payments, as reported by The Block. In plain terms, the address that sends you funds is often not where the money started.

For sanctions compliance, that is the core problem. A payment can look clean at the last hop and still carry funds that passed through a sanctioned address a few steps earlier. Our guide to crypto sanctions screening explains how OFAC lists crypto addresses and how screening tools match against them.

Direct and indirect exposure: what screening looks for

Most wallet screening, whether at an exchange or a bank, separates two kinds of risk:

Direct exposure: the address itself is on a sanctions list, is frozen by a stablecoin issuer, or sent or received funds directly from a flagged address.

Indirect exposure: funds reached the address through one or more intermediate wallets from a risky source, such as a sanctioned entity, a mixer, a scam or stolen funds.

Direct exposure is usually treated as more serious. Indirect exposure is weighed by how many hops away the source is and how much of the balance it accounts for. A small, distant link is not the same as a large, recent one. We cover how this weighting works in direct vs. indirect risk in on-chain analysis.

Mastercard’s description, which mentions tracing where funds originated, suggests its scoring considers the history of funds, not only the last sender. The reports do not say how many hops it traces or how it weights them.

What this means for traders and small platforms

The announcement itself is aimed at banks and payment providers. Still, it points to a wider trend: screening of crypto wallet history is becoming standard in mainstream finance, not just at crypto exchanges.

For individuals and smaller businesses that receive stablecoins, a few practical points follow:

Expect more checks downstream. If you later send funds to a bank, payment provider or exchange that screens, the history of those funds may be reviewed. Funds received from a risky address can lead to a held deposit or extra questions.

Check before you accept, not after. In peer-to-peer trades, the time to look at an address is before you release goods, fiat or other crypto. After the transfer, you cannot undo it.

Look at sources, not only the address. An address that is not itself listed can still have significant indirect exposure.

Keep records. Notes on who you traded with, and when, help if you are later asked about the source of funds.

You can run a blockchain sanctions check on an address before you accept it. SafeON’s AML wallet check screens a TRON (TRC20) or BNB Smart Chain address and returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with the reasons. It checks exposure to OFAC-sanctioned addresses and USDT freeze or blacklist status, and traces where funds came from across several hops, including mixers, darknet markets, scams, stolen funds and exchanges. For Ethereum, it checks freeze status.

Check a wallet’s risk on SafeON before you accept a payment.

Screening shows risk. It is not a legal opinion, and SafeON cannot unfreeze, release or recover funds. If you have a specific compliance obligation, speak to a qualified adviser.

FAQ

What is crypto sanctions screening?

It is the process of checking a wallet address, and the history of its funds, against sanctions lists such as the addresses OFAC publishes. The aim is to find out whether a payment involves a sanctioned person or entity, directly or through intermediate wallets, before it is accepted or processed.

Can a wallet be flagged for funds it received indirectly?

Yes. Many screening tools trace funds back several hops. If a meaningful share of an address’s funds came from a sanctioned or illicit source through other wallets, it can receive a higher risk score even though the address itself is not listed. How strongly this counts depends on the distance and the amount.

How can I check a wallet against sanctions lists myself?

Paste the address into a screening tool before you accept funds. SafeON’s wallet check covers TRON and BNB Smart Chain addresses, shows OFAC exposure, USDT freeze status and source-of-funds risk, and gives a 0-100 score with the reasons. You can also add a wallet to a watchlist to get alerts if its risk changes.

Is Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security available to individual users?

Not according to the reports. It is a service for financial institutions such as banks, delivered through an API. It launches first in North America, with worldwide availability expected in 2027.

Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security scores payments for fraud and sanctions risk before settlement.
