What Happens After a Hack

Can stolen crypto be recovered? The short, honest answer

Can stolen crypto be recovered? Sometimes, partly, and rarely in full. A blockchain transaction cannot be reversed by a bank or a support desk, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission puts it plainly: cryptocurrency payments typically are not reversible, and funds usually come back only if the recipient sends them back. What can help is speed: a fast report to the exchange that received the funds, to law enforcement, and, for stablecoins, the chance that an issuer freezes the attacker’s tokens. None of these routes is guaranteed, and none of them can be bought from a stranger who promises results.

This guide covers what happens to stolen funds after a hack, what victims can realistically do, why a stablecoin freeze is not a refund, how to spot fake “recovery services”, and why anyone receiving crypto should check whether it traces back to stolen assets.

What happens to stolen crypto after a hack

Attackers know the clock is against them, so laundering starts within minutes. The pattern repeats across large incidents:

Convert what can be frozen. Stablecoins such as Tether USDT and USDC can be blacklisted by their issuers, so attackers swap them into assets no issuer controls, such as ETH or BTC.

Split and scatter. Funds are spread across many fresh addresses and several blockchains to make following them slower and more expensive.

Obscure the trail. Mixers, cross-chain bridges and chains of intermediate wallets are used to break the visible link between the hack and later deposits. Our guide to crypto mixers and source-of-funds tracing explains how these hops still leave patterns.

Cash out. Eventually the funds have to reach an exchange or an over-the-counter desk to become fiat money, which is the point where identity checks and freezes can still bite.

The FBI described this pattern after the roughly $1.5 billion theft from the exchange Bybit in February 2025, which it attributed to North Korea: the attackers quickly converted some of the stolen assets to Bitcoin and other virtual assets and dispersed them across thousands of addresses on multiple blockchains. The FBI asked exchanges, bridges, DeFi services and other providers to block transactions with or derived from the addresses involved. That request is the practical reason stolen funds can sometimes be stopped: not by reversing a transaction, but by service providers refusing to process them.

What victims can actually do in the first hours

If your wallet or account has been drained, the order of actions matters more than anything else. This checklist does not guarantee any outcome, and it is not legal advice.

Step

Why it matters

Stop further losses: move any remaining funds from the compromised wallet to a new, clean wallet and revoke token approvals

Drainers often keep access through approvals or a leaked seed phrase. See wallet drainers and revoking approvals.

Record everything: transaction hashes, attacker addresses, times, screenshots, how you were contacted

Exchanges and police need exact on-chain references, not descriptions.

Contact the receiving exchange’s official support if funds landed at an exchange address

An exchange can only act on funds that are still on its platform, and only under its own policies.

File a police report with your local cybercrime unit, and with the relevant national channel (in the U.S., IC3)

Exchanges and issuers often need a law-enforcement request before acting.

Ignore unsolicited offers of help

Victims are actively targeted by a second wave of fraud (see below).

The FTC lists several U.S. reporting channels, including ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov, plus the exchange you used to send the money. Outside the U.S., use your country’s police cybercrime unit; the principle is the same.

When stablecoin issuers freeze stolen funds, and why it is not a refund

Issuers of tokens like Tether USDT and USDC can blacklist an address at the contract level, after which the tokens at that address cannot be moved. Issuers decide this at their own discretion, often in cooperation with law enforcement. Our explainer on what a USDT freeze is covers the mechanics.

A recent case shows both the value and the limits. After a breach at the exchange Bitget, which the exchange put at about $387.5 million (revising an initial $351.6 million estimate), Circle and Tether froze a wallet linked to the hack on September 25, 2026, blacklisting about 99,990 USDC and 218,023 USDT, roughly $318,000 in total, according to Decrypt. Decrypt also reported that the same wallet held about 170 ETH that no issuer could touch, and that the attacker appears to have swapped most stablecoins into ETH before the issuers acted. Bitget said its Protection Fund covers the financial impact of the incident, as reported by BleepingComputer. That is a decision by the exchange, not a result of the freeze.

Three points to keep in mind:

A freeze locks funds in place; it does not send them back to anyone.

Any later return of frozen funds depends on the issuer’s processes and, usually, on legal or law-enforcement requests.

Only the issuer can freeze or unfreeze its token. No third-party service can do it for you.

Crypto recovery scams: warning signs of fake recovery services

The biggest secondary risk after a hack is the “recovery service”. The FBI has warned about fraudsters posing as lawyers at fictitious law firms who contact crypto scam victims and offer to recover their funds. Between February 2023 and February 2024, victims further exploited this way reported losses of over $9.9 million to IC3. Warning signs from that notice and from consumer guidance:

They found you. Unsolicited contact by social media, messaging apps or email from someone who knows about your loss.

Borrowed authority. Claims of working with the FBI, another government agency or a real exchange. The FBI states: “Law enforcement does not charge victims a fee for investigating crimes.”

Upfront fees. A portion of the fees upfront, with the rest due “on recovery”, or payments for “back taxes” and other charges before anything is returned.

Guaranteed results. Any promise to “hack back”, reverse a transaction or unfreeze tokens.

Data grabs. Requests for your seed phrase, private keys, banking details or ID documents “to verify” you.

Thin footprint. Vague language, a new website and little verifiable history.

Never share a seed phrase or private key with anyone, under any circumstances. If an offer arrives after a loss, the safest default is to decline and report it to the same police unit handling your case.

Receiving crypto? Check whether funds are linked to stolen assets

Stolen funds do not disappear; they get passed on. When someone pays you in USDT on TRON or BNB Smart Chain, those coins may be a few hops away from a hack. Exchanges and issuers can block funds derived from hack addresses (the FBI explicitly asked them to after the Bybit theft), so the person who unknowingly receives them can find their own deposit held or their address frozen.

Before accepting a large transfer from an unfamiliar counterparty, or before depositing to an exchange, screen the sending address:

Is the address already on a USDT freeze blacklist or linked to OFAC-sanctioned addresses?

Do its funds trace back, over several hops, to stolen funds, mixers, scams or darknet sources?

Does it show high-risk behaviour, such as rapid splitting across fresh wallets?

SafeON screens a wallet address and returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with the reasons, including exposure to stolen funds, sanctions and freeze status, and lets you add wallets to a watchlist with alerts. Our step-by-step guide on checking wallet risk before a deposit shows how to read the results. SafeON does not recover, unfreeze or release funds; it helps you avoid receiving tainted ones. Check a wallet’s risk on SafeON.

FAQ

Can stolen crypto be traced?

Usually, yes. Public blockchains record every transfer, so stolen funds can be followed across addresses, although mixers, bridges and splitting make it slower. Tracing shows where funds went; it does not by itself return them.

Can an exchange return stolen crypto?

Only if the funds are still on that exchange, and only under its own policies, often after a request from law enforcement. Exchanges cannot reverse on-chain transactions. Report quickly through the exchange’s official support channel and include transaction hashes.

Are crypto recovery services legit?

Treat any service that contacts you unsolicited, charges upfront fees or guarantees recovery as a likely scam. The FBI has warned about fake law firms targeting victims, and law enforcement does not charge victims to investigate crimes.

Does SafeON recover stolen funds?

No. SafeON does not recover, unfreeze or release funds and does not give legal advice. It screens wallet addresses for risk, including exposure to stolen funds, so you can avoid receiving them.

Can stolen crypto be recovered?
