KYT vs. Wallet Screening Explained

KYT, or Know Your Transaction, is the ongoing monitoring of crypto transfers linked to a customer after the relationship has started. It asks whether each new transfer still fits what the business knows about that customer, and whether it links them to sanctioned, frozen or illicit sources. Crypto wallet screening is the narrower, point-in-time check: a single address is assessed before a deposit is credited, a payout is sent or an OTC trade settles. Exchanges and OTC desks that move stablecoins generally need both, with screening as the gate and KYT behind it. The weak point is the time between the two. A wallet that screened clean last week can pick up new exposure before its next transfer.

What is KYT (Know Your Transaction)?

KYT applies transaction monitoring, a long-standing practice in traditional finance, to on-chain activity. Instead of judging an address once, KYT analyses every transfer that touches a customer’s account over the life of the relationship. Rules and risk models flag activity that departs from the customer’s expected profile. They also flag transfers that newly connect the customer to high-risk counterparties, such as a recently designated cluster or an address reported in a scam.

The result is usually a stream of alerts that analysts review as cases. KYT shows how risk changes over time, but it needs people, tuned thresholds and a documented process for closing alerts. Exact obligations depend on jurisdiction and licence; this article is not legal advice.

KYT vs. wallet screening: what each one checks

Wallet screening is a risk assessment of a single address at the moment it is presented as a deposit source, withdrawal destination or settlement address. For the consumer side of this check, see our explainer on what an AML check in crypto is. A serious screening check looks at several layers of evidence at once:

Sanctions exposure: whether the address is listed, or has transacted with addresses linked to persons on the OFAC Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list.

Stablecoin freeze status: whether the issuer has frozen or blacklisted the address’s USDT, which makes the funds unusable on that contract.

Source of funds: where incoming value came from, traced across several hops to mixers, darknet markets, scams, stolen funds, exchanges or Iran-linked exchanges.

Behavioural patterns: transaction shapes often associated with layering or obfuscation, even when no labelled entity is involved.

The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control states in its virtual currency FAQs that sanctions compliance obligations are the same for digital and fiat currency. OFAC may add digital currency addresses to the SDN List, but the same FAQs warn that these address listings are not likely to be exhaustive. They also say firms should adopt a tailored, risk-based compliance program that generally includes sanctions list screening. Because those listings are incomplete, serious screening cannot stop at a list lookup.

Dimension

Wallet screening

KYT (transaction monitoring)

Timing

Before onboarding, deposit credit or payout

Continuous, on every transfer after onboarding

Unit of analysis

A single address

A stream of transactions linked to a customer

Main question

Should we accept from, or send to, this address now?

Has this customer’s risk changed?

Typical output

Risk score with reasons; accept, hold or reject

Alerts and cases for analyst review

Best suited to

OTC trades, one-off counterparties, withdrawal whitelisting

Exchange accounts, custodial wallets, recurring flows

Main failure mode

Stale result if the address is never re-checked

Alert fatigue if thresholds are poorly tuned

A risk score turns these layers into one number so thresholds apply consistently. In SafeON it runs from 0 to 100 and always lists the reasons, because two addresses with the same score can need different handling. The key distinction is direct exposure (the address itself dealt with a high-risk entity) versus indirect exposure through intermediate wallets, which weakens with each hop but is not zero. Our guide to direct vs indirect risk in on-chain analysis explains how to read that difference, and the piece on mixers and source-of-funds tracing shows why obfuscation services raise scores even without a sanctions hit. Some findings override any weighting: if the address itself is sanctioned or its USDT is frozen, that fact alone usually decides the practical outcome.

Why a wallet’s risk can change between screening and the next transfer

A screening result describes the address as it was at the moment of the check. Several things can change afterwards without the counterparty doing anything unusual:

New designations: OFAC can add addresses to the SDN List at any time. An address your counterparty dealt with last month may be listed today, which changes how its history should be read.

New freezes: a stablecoin issuer can freeze an address after your check. Funds that were usable at onboarding can become unusable on that contract before settlement.

New inflows: the wallet keeps receiving value. A single deposit from a mixer, a scam cluster or stolen funds can shift its source-of-funds profile.

New attribution: addresses that were unlabelled when you checked may later be linked to a scam, a hack or an illicit service, which raises the exposure of wallets that dealt with them.

This is the practical gap behind the question of how to detect whether a wallet’s risk level changed between screening and the next transfer. A clean result from last week is evidence about last week. Without a fresh check or monitoring, the business relies on information that may already be out of date.

Ongoing monitoring: re-screening, watchlists and alerts

There are three ways to close that gap, in increasing order of effort:

Re-screen at each transfer: run a fresh check on the counterparty address immediately before every deposit credit, payout or settlement, rather than reusing an earlier result. This is the minimum for any repeat counterparty.

Watchlists with alerts: add recurring counterparties, treasury wallets and high-value customers to a watchlist that is re-screened automatically, and alert the team when an address’s risk changes. SafeON’s watchlist sends these alerts, including through Telegram, so the team can see a change without having to look up the address again by hand. Re-screening right before each transfer remains the primary control.

Full KYT: monitor every transaction across all customer accounts, with case management and documented alert handling. This suits businesses with large, recurring flows.

Beyond a handful of transfers a day, manual lookups do not scale; SafeON’s API lets a deposit or withdrawal flow request a risk score and its reasons before the transaction proceeds. For a single case, analysts can use the AML wallet check and keep the PDF report on file.

Which approach fits a P2P trader, an OTC desk or an exchange

The right level of control depends on volume, repeat business and how much a single bad transfer would cost.

P2P trader: screening each counterparty address before releasing or accepting USDT is the core control. Re-screen repeat counterparties instead of trusting an old result, and watch the few addresses you deal with regularly.

OTC desk: with fewer, larger trades, pre-trade screening of every settlement address plus a watchlist of repeat counterparties covers most of the exposure. Route scores above the desk’s threshold to a named reviewer and record the reasons and the decision.

Exchange: with many active deposit addresses, screening alone leaves a gap. Screening at deposit credit and withdrawal, combined with KYT-style monitoring of customer flows, is the usual design; API-based checks keep the gate automatic.

Each business must still settle some questions in its own policy, ideally with counsel: how many hops of indirect exposure are acceptable, and what share of value from a risky source should trigger a hold. To see how an address scores today, check a wallet’s risk on SafeON.

FAQ

What is KYT in crypto?

KYT, or Know Your Transaction, is the continuous monitoring of crypto transfers linked to a customer after onboarding. It flags activity that departs from the expected profile or links the customer to high-risk counterparties.

Is KYT the same as wallet screening?

No. Wallet screening tells you whether an address is acceptable at the moment you check it. KYT tells you whether a customer’s activity has changed since then, across every new transfer. Businesses with recurring flows generally need both.

How do you detect if a wallet’s risk level changed after it was screened?

Re-screen the address immediately before the next transfer instead of reusing the earlier result, or add it to a watchlist that is re-checked automatically and sends an alert when its risk changes. New sanctions designations, stablecoin freezes, new inflows and new attribution can all change the result.

Do small businesses need KYT or is wallet screening enough?

It depends on volume, the type of counterparties and the business’s legal obligations, which should be confirmed with qualified counsel. Many smaller P2P traders and OTC desks rely on screening before each transfer plus watchlist alerts for repeat counterparties. Full KYT becomes more relevant as recurring flows and customer numbers grow.

What is KYT in crypto?
